At the beginning of the semester, I believed art to be anything that you can create that requires your imagination. For example, when drawing a picture, it requires your creative thoughts to flow to create the end product or to create a piece using what you see in front of you. My idea of what art is now is similar but I realized that is a lot broader than what I thought it to be originally. Art is practically anything because as long as it is created, it is considered art. Originally, I believed architecture was not considered art because it is just building a structure but the way it is created allows it to be art. Everyone can see art differently because two people can get similar but rarely the same message from looking at a piece. Art to me now is anything that requires your hands to create, for example, a poem is considered art because the person used their hands to write out the words to make the piece.

My major is kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science and it is known as the study of human movement. I plan on going to graduate school after I get my bachelor’s degree to become a physical therapist but I am still exploring other career options as well. Art can be useful for my major because there are classes I need to take like anatomy and physiology that can help me learn through pictures and drawings. Relating art to the actual job field, I can create a website to draw clients in if I plan on starting a private business or creating an infographic about me when working in a company. For design, it can be useful for me to think of advertisement ideas to gain patients.

As I leave my art class, I can enjoy art more because I had a little taste of what it is like being the creator of workpieces. Before starting the art class, I considered photography to be my only creative output. Even though I came out of this still wanting to just capture pictures, I think I will now try to create more digital art to explore. I learned from this class that as long as the effort is there, the work can be considered art and the artist does not have to be perfect in creating pieces. Art can be used to express thoughts and sometimes help bring to light the problems our world may be facing. Without art, I feel like many people will feel incomplete because, with everything we do, there is always a little component of art. Additionally, art allows people to escape from reality when creating pieces while expressing their feelings.

Art matters because without artists, art, and artist impulse, we will no longer have buildings and the designs will all be the same with no special spin in each piece. Additionally, everyone will be the same because there will be no creative input and the world will be black and white. I also feel that there will be more materials going to waste because everyone will see the same things as treasure and trash. There will also only be one correct answer and we will lose many of the mediums like photography, painting, and websites. This will cause the world to be boring and no need for people to travel to see unique pieces or buildings.

The past slogan of the National Endowment for Arts (NEA), “a great nation deserves great art,” is something I agree with slightly because I believe that great art should not only be offered in a great nation. Although a great nation does deserve great art, art should not be limited to great nations. Art is something everyone should enjoy no matter where they are because it is the universal language and allows people to be given the same opportunities.

During this semester, I experienced frustrations and happiness from my art piece not turning out the way I wanted it to turn out or happiness from the end product. Moving forward, art is something I can appreciate and use in almost everything I do because I learned that there is a little bit of it in everything we do. For example, even though many of the students have different majors, we can all incorporate art in some way or another. I will acknowledge the artists and how much time and effort they put into their projects when looking at pieces in the future because of how much thought they need to input to deliver the message they want to share.
